Trip Overview

Pisang Peak offers a unique blend of trekking and climbing, making it an ideal choice for adventurers seeking an exhilarating challenge amidst stunning natural beauty. Standing at 6,091 meters in the Annapurna region of Nepal, Pisang Peak lies between the towering peaks of Annapurna I and Manaslu, resembling a pyramid of rock, snow, and ice. The summit rewards climbers with breathtaking views of Manaslu, Annapurna, Ganesh Himal, Tilicho Peak, and Kang Guru Peak, among others.

The first successful ascent of Pisang Peak was made by a German expedition in 1955, and since then, it has become a popular trekking peak. Its relatively straightforward climb, combined with rich cultural experiences, makes it a great introduction to high-altitude mountaineering. The journey takes you through various landscapes, from lush rice fields and pine forests to arid deserts, as you pass through picturesque villages inhabited by the Thakali, Gurung, Tamangs, Magars, and Sherpa people. Their warmth and hospitality are part of the charm that makes this trek unforgettable.

Along the way, you'll also visit the sacred site of Muktinath and experience the unique beauty of the Mustang region, including crossing the Thorong La Pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the world.

The journey begins in Kathmandu, where we drive to Syange and start the trek through Dharapani, Chame, and Upper Pisang villages. After setting up camp at the Pisang Peak base camp, we move to the high camp, where we’ll rest before summiting early the next day. Once we reach the top, we descend via the Annapurna circuit, passing through Manang, Thorong La Pass, and the desert region of Muktinath. Finally, we fly to Pokhara and drive back to Kathmandu, completing an unforgettable adventure.

Trip Information

Best Time for Pisang Peak Climbing

The optimal time to climb Pisang Peak is during the autumn months (September to November), when weather conditions are generally stable, and the risk of avalanches is lower. The second-best period is spring (April to May), where you’ll encounter some snow in the steeper sections, creating a more challenging yet rewarding climb. The temperatures will still be cooler due to the remnants of winter, making this an excellent time for adventure.

Elevation and Distance

Pisang Peak stands tall at 6,091 meters above sea level, with the highest point of the trek being Thorong La Pass, at 5,416 meters. The trek begins from Syange, located 150 kilometers from Kathmandu, and the peak is situated 152 kilometers north of the capital.

Maximum/Minimum Walk Per Day

Over the 18-day Pisang Peak expedition, you will trek for 12 days, with daily walks averaging 5 to 7 hours. On average, you'll cover 10 to 15 kilometers per day. The shortest and easiest day of the trek will be Day 8, when you’ll hike to Pisang Base Camp from Upper Pisang. The most strenuous day will be Day 14 when we cross Thorong La Pass, requiring a 7-9 hour walk to Muktinath.

Difficulty and Acclimatization

Climbing Pisang Peak is considered a moderately difficult alpine climb, categorized as PD+ (a grade in alpine mountaineering). The main challenge is navigating slopes of 45°/50°, equipped with fixed ropes. It is crucial to be familiar with using a jumar (ascender) and comfortable with crampons.

Our itinerary ensures gradual acclimatization, with two rest days: one in Kathmandu and the other at Upper Pisang. The approach to the peak is gradual, and from Base Camp to the summit, we will limit walking to 3-5 hours a day to give our bodies ample time to adjust to the high-altitude environment.

Can a Beginner Climb Pisang Peak?

While Pisang Peak is one of the more accessible trekking peaks in Nepal, it is still over 6,000 meters high, which requires good physical fitness and some mountaineering knowledge. Though it doesn't require advanced skills, previous experience with high-altitude trekking and basic climbing techniques is highly recommended. We advise beginners to first gain experience on lower-altitude peaks like Mera before attempting Pisang Peak.

Preparation and Training for Pisang Peak Climbing

To prepare for the trekking portion of the Pisang Peak expedition, we recommend maintaining an active lifestyle with activities like running, cycling, and swimming. A high-altitude trek in Nepal, such as Annapurna or Everest Base Camp (EBC), will help build the endurance necessary for the climb. For the climbing part, we suggest tackling an easier peak, like Mera or Lobuche, before attempting Pisang Peak.

Pisang Peak Climbing Alternate Route

There are two routes to climb Pisang Peak: the North Ridge (the standard route) and the Southwest Ridge (a more challenging option with higher avalanche risk). If you prefer not to summit, you can trek to Pisang Base Camp, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayas.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is a potential risk, especially above 4,000 meters. Our itinerary includes gradual elevation gain, which helps reduce the chances of altitude sickness. Symptoms may appear at higher altitudes but usually subside after 2-3 days. We advise drinking plenty of fluids, walking slowly, and listening to your body. In rare cases, if symptoms worsen, our guide may decide to descend to a lower altitude for safety.

Transportation, Meals, and Drink

We aim to provide a hassle-free experience, so we handle all transportation and accommodation logistics. Upon arrival, you’ll be picked up from the airport and transferred to your hotel. We will provide a private vehicle for the journey to Syange and arrange a return flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. The return to Kathmandu will be by a comfortable tourist bus.

Meals are provided throughout the trek. We offer complimentary breakfast in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the trekking and climbing phases. Our team will organize meals at Base Camp and High Camp, with tea or coffee included.

Communication, Gadgets Charging, and Internet/WiFi

Throughout the trek, you'll have access to communication, charging, and internet, especially up to Dharapani, where Wi-Fi and device charging are usually free. However, starting from Upper Pisang, these services come at an extra cost. For better connectivity, you can purchase an NTC or NCELL SIM card, but be aware that internet access may be limited at higher altitudes.

Permits for Pisang Peak Climbing

To climb Pisang Peak, you’ll need to obtain an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), a Pisang Peak Climbing Permit, and a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card. These permits are included in our program, so you won’t need to worry about obtaining them on your own.
