Trip Information

Best Time for Island Peak Climbing (18 Days)

The optimal seasons for climbing Island Peak and trekking to Everest Base Camp are autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May). During autumn, the weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging between 5 to 15°C. The forests come alive with vibrant shades of orange and yellow, offering stunning views of the Himalayan peaks.

Spring also presents ideal conditions for climbing Island Peak and EBC, with moderate temperatures averaging around 16 to 17°C. The landscape flourishes with blooming Himalayan flora, and the weather transitions from chilly to warmer, drier conditions.

Elevation and Distance

The Island Peak climb, combined with the Everest Base Camp trek, covers a total distance of approximately 150 km. Initially, we travel 137 km by air to Lukla from Kathmandu, followed by a 65 km hike to Everest Base Camp at 5364 meters. We will also ascend Kala Patthar (5548 meters), which provides a fantastic view of Everest.

The final stage of the climb focuses on reaching the summit of Island Peak at 6165 meters, the highest point of the journey. Island Peak is located 160 km from Kathmandu and 41 km from Lukla.

The highest overnight stop will be at the Island Peak Base Camp at 5200 meters, which is 20 meters higher than Gorakshep and marks the second-highest elevation on the trek.

Maximum and Minimum Walking Distances

This expedition is designed for all fitness levels, with daily walk durations between 5 to 7 hours, covering 10-15 km. Day 13 is more challenging, involving a 9 to 10-hour journey from Island Peak Base Camp to Chhukung.

Day 11 will be more relaxed, with a 2-hour walk from Dingboche to Chhukung.

Island Peak Climbing Difficulty and Acclimatization

Island Peak is classified as a 2B alpine climb, and both the Everest Base Camp trek and Kala Patthar climb are considered moderate. The climb itself includes rocky sections, crevasses, and short rock walls with slopes up to 50°. The last 200 meters are particularly difficult and require the use of a Jumar and a glacial path.

Despite these challenges, Island Peak is considered a trekking peak, requiring basic technical skills. The combined EBC and Island Peak climb is suitable for beginners with an adventurous spirit.

Altitude is the primary risk factor, and we have planned acclimatization with two nights in Namche and two nights in Dingboche to adjust to the high-altitude environment.

Can a Beginner Join This Trek?

Yes, anyone in good physical shape can join the Island Peak climb. Previous climbing experience is not required but can be helpful.

To succeed, you should have above-average physical fitness, stamina, and health. The journey will involve hiking challenging terrain and using climbing equipment such as crampons, ropes, harnesses, and ice axes.

We recommend some basic rock climbing or mountain hiking training before attempting the summit. Local treks like Ghorepani, Annapurna Base Camp, or Everest Base Camp in Nepal can also serve as good preparation.

Preparation and Training

For those new to hiking or climbing, we suggest starting with shorter hikes (8-10 km) and gradually increasing the distance to 20 km or more. Running can also enhance cardiovascular fitness and stamina, improving lung capacity and heart health.

Consider participating in local summit tours to gain experience and understand the challenges posed by high-altitude environments. These experiences will help you develop the necessary skills for tackling larger mountains like Island Peak.

Alternate Routes

You can opt for an alternative route, bypassing the Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek. This will shorten the expedition and reduce your time at high altitudes. If you wish to challenge yourself further, the northern ridge approach to Island Peak is more technical than the standard south ridge approach.

Alternatively, our original itinerary can be extended by three more days to explore the serene Gokyo Valley.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is a concern above 3000 meters, and it is a primary risk for our Island Peak expedition. However, our planned acclimatization schedule helps participants adjust to the low-oxygen conditions of the Khumbu region.

Common symptoms, including nausea, insomnia, loss of appetite, and a rapid heartbeat, typically resolve if treated early with Diamox, a medication for altitude sickness. If more severe symptoms arise, evacuation to a lower altitude is necessary.

Before the trek, participants must have valid travel insurance that includes helicopter evacuation and transport back home if required.

Transportation, Accommodation, Food, and Drink

Our Island Peak expedition includes all transportation, accommodation, and meals. We provide airport transfers in Kathmandu, round-trip flights between Kathmandu and Lukla, and ground transportation.

In Kathmandu, accommodation is in shared rooms at a 3-star hotel. Along the trek, we use the best available lodges, and meals are served at local teahouses along the route. Breakfast and dinner are provided at the lodges, with lunch served during the hike. Fresh seasonal fruits will also be provided after dinner.

At the base camp, we supply tents, mattresses, and kitchen utensils, with our team responsible for setting up the camp and preparing meals.

Communication, Charging, and Internet/WIFI

Namaste and NCELL provide reliable coverage in the Khumbu region, and their SIM cards are easily obtainable in Kathmandu. These networks offer 4G services in most villages, except for Island Peak Base Camp and summit.

WIFI is available in lodges for an additional fee, and Everest Link WIFI operates at the base camp under favorable weather conditions. Charging services for your gadgets are available at the lodges for an extra fee, but the costs are not included in our service.

Permits for Island Peak Climbing (18 Days)

Our team will obtain the required climbing permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) in Kathmandu. Additionally, we will secure the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality permit and the Sagarmatha National Park permit, which will be provided by the guide at Lukla. After completing the trek, the company will issue a certificate to commemorate the achievement.
